A move by the politically influential prison officers union to thwart the appointment of a new state personnel director failed Wednesday when the California Senate's Rules Committee approved the nominee on a unanimous vote.   

 CCPOA opposes Gilb's nomination, blaming him for failed talks

Amid stalled negotiations over its expired contract, the state correctional officers union has taken its hardball labor tactics to a new level -- it's taking on the leader of the other side.

  
California's governor, legislators and constitional officers were granted a 2.75 percent pay increase Monday -- except for the attorney general and superintendent of public instruction, who received 5 percent hikes.   

-- but Dept. of Finance says it's too early to tell.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday turned up pressure on state lawmakers for spending cuts in next year's state budget after May tax revenue reports revealed a $764 million shortfall for the current fiscal year.
