With the announcement today of the State’s liability for future retiree health insurance and other post-employment benefits (OPEB) by State Controller John Chiang, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) urged public employers throughout the State to begin prefunding those costs.   
Health care costs. They’re going up for everybody: providers, employers and insured employees. But which group is shouldering the greatest percentage of increases?   
Surprisingly robust collections of personal income taxes this month have brightened the state's budget picture by $1.3 billion -- easing concerns over a big shortfall next year.   
A Sacramento jury has awarded $7.6 million to a California Department of Education whistle-blower who claimed he was retaliated against after he reported the misappropriation of millions of dollars in government funds.   

If the CalPERS Health Benefits Committee had accepted its staff recommendations today, April 17, ACSS members and other CalPERS members would be paying a lot more money for office visits, emergency room visits, prescriptions and premiums, as well other increased out-of-pocket expenses, beginning Jan. 1, 2008.
