Facing a Layoff

Many state managers, supervisors and confidential employees - ACSS members and nonmembers alike - could be faced with the possibility of being laid off due to the current budget crisis.

Newspaper articles and bulletins from the Department of Personnel Administration (DPA) are keeping state employees informed but many excluded employees still have questions and concerns regarding the layoff process, the SROA procedure, the appeal process and the role of the ACSS Labor Relations Representative (LRR) during this process.

Should you find yourself facing a layoff and you have unanswered questions, we encourage ACSS members to call their LRR to get the latest information and check out these links (right column).

Not a member? Don't delay and join today before you need representation because ACSS does not provide counsel or representation to nonmembers or late-jointers.

Financial A$$istance

ACSS has set aside a limited fund to provide job-relocation aid, up to $250, to any ACSS member facing layoff. To be eligible for this financial assistance (taxable), a member must have been a member of ACSS as of April 4, 2008,* and

  1. received official notice of layoff, or
  2. been identifed as a "surplus" employee, or
  3. been placed on an SROA list.

Such members may be reimbursed for the following expenses: career publications, resume-writing workshopts, interview preparation workshops, typing services, career enhancement seminars, computer skills training, or related services to improve re-employment opportunities.

For more information, call ACSS at (800) 624-2137 or (916) 326-4257.

*A motion before the ACSS Board of Directors at the April 5-6, 2008, Board Meeting was approved to change the date on page 4 of the ACSS publication "Information and Counsel for State Excluded Employees Facing Layoff" to show that the date to be eligible for assistance is changed to be April 4, 2008.
