With just hours left until they faced the prospect of suspended salaries, the state’s legislators approved a budget package intended to close the nearly $10 billion deficit on Wednesday evening.
The plan—which Governor Brown now has twelve days to either approve or veto—does not include the “pension gutting” agenda and spending caps that appeared as part of a list of demands released by Senate Republicans earlier in the week; however, the plan to balance the budget relies on cuts to the university system and courts, as well as reallocating funds originally intended for children’s health and educational programs.
Your ACSS officially supported revenue extensions to help balance the budget. The extensions were the cornerstone of Governor Brown’s May budget proposal, which faced strong opposition from the Republican caucus and their aforementioned list of demands.
Governor Brown is scheduled to address the press today at noon.
