Prompted by the sale of 11 state buildings, the Department of General Services will issue layoff warnings to about 1,000 of its custodians. The goal is to eliminate 450 jobs by the end of February. The notices will be issued by Nov. 1. SEIU Local 1000's tentative contract with the governor doesn't provide layoff protection.

Re: State will issue layoff warnings to 1,000 custodians

Does anyone realize that the money the state recieves in this sale (really a 20 year lease back) has been totally negated by the delay in the budget? What is happening in fact is the mass layoff of state workers. Payback by our outgoing Governor Terminator to the state employee unions for giving him problems. Pure politics.
My husband has served the state for 27 years. He is being layed off less than two years from bring eligible for his full retirement. Early retirement will result in financial disaster. The only option to keep his medical benefits There are no transfers in his area, The San Francisco Bay Area. This area has suffered the most closures. Why? He faces being surplused out. After 27 years. But, as he said to me the other evening as we dicussed our situation, these things happen. Still seens a shame to me. He's worried about the moral of his crew who will be losing their jobs also. The human cost in this deal was never counted in the price of the sale. So as the State clear cuts for the future jobs and people get plowed under. I hope it was worth it.
