This may be no surprise to state workers, but the California Budget Project has published a report, based on Franchise Tax Board data from 2007, that shows the income gap between the wealthiest 1 percent of Californians and the middle-income taxpayers has widened. The adjusted gross income of the wealthy has nearly doubled since the early 1990s, more than eight times the increase of the middle income earners. No surprise again: Average corporate profits more than doubled during the same period and almost none of it trickled down.

As a 'State' employee and MPP in the CSU system, as well as a paying member of ACSS, I was apalled to find out that our fee waiver (dependent) has adminsitered Professional Fees on certain MBA programs, that are being waived only for certain groups of employees (Units 3,4,2,5,7 & 9). While I understand that unions negotiate such benefits with the CSU, it seems blatently discriminatory that only select groups are not included in the currently administered Professional Fees (Units 1,8 and MPP (Management)). As a Manager, I work extremely hard and have been tasked with manually processing the mandated furloughs for employees on our campus (increase in our workloads), have taken the 10.07% furlough for the year, as well as 10% less time to process Payroll. The workloads have increased tremendously nonetheless. On top of benefits being scaled back or cut, fees are going up and managing daily processing is becoming merely impossible. Why haven't groups like ACSS advocated for its paying members to ensure that things such as Professional Fees for the MBA programs are either waived for all categories, or not waived for all categories (across the board)? What benefits exist for paying CSU members of ACSS? Because we are "at will" employees of the CSU system, it sure seems that we have absolutely no rights as employees or human beings, while we are expected to 'manage' and oversee the daily operations of the CSU system.
